In this study we model the potential historical shifts in the geographical distribution of the western capercaillie. We compare current and historical ecological niche models with phylogenetic analyses to study postglacial colonisation of the Europe by the species. We try to answer the questions on demographic changes, phylogenetic lineages divergence and identification of glacial refugia and contact zones.
