Detailed data on research infrastructure/laboratory

  1. Description and data on the research infrastructure/laboratory:
Device for continuous measurement of the CO2/H2O balance above the surface of the forest stand, in this case an unprocessed disaster area from 2004. Separation of CO2 flows into intake or output is based on simultaneous high-frequency measurement (20 Hz) of CO2 concentration and 3D direction and air flow velocity using the eddy covariance method. The devices are placed on a 12 m mast, which allows monitoring of the CO2/H2O balance at the ecosystem level (on the order of tens to hundreds of m2). The measured high-frequency data are stored on a USB drive as 30 min averages. The infrastructure includes microclimatic measurements (profile temperature and humidity of air and soil, global radiation, FAR radiation, heat flow in the soil, precipitation, stored in a 20 min interval.

  1. List of equipment:

  • Licor 7500 DS SmartFlux 3 Gill WM – device and data logger for measuring CO2 concentration and air direction/speed and SW for calculating CO2 fluxes
  • NR Lite radiation balance sensor
  • EMS 11 global radiation sensor
  • 2 pcs air temperature/RH sensor
  • Pt100 soil temperature sensor, 2 pcs
  • SpecTech SM100 soil moisture sensor, 2 pcs
  • Hukseflux soil heat flow sensor
  • Rail Box data logger, EMS Brno
  • 3 pcs solar panels, solar battery and controller
  1. Justification of uniqueness/strategic importance:
The only long-term measurement of CO2 balance using the eddy covariance method in a forest environment in Slovakia. The infrastructure is part of the national and EU network for long-term ecological research eLTER.

  1. Assigning research infrastructure to one or more research areas:

  • Agricultural, forestry and veterinary sciences
  • 100 Environmental sciences and Ecology
