It's common knowledge that identification of a fungus isolated from decayed wood in the absence of a mature and undeformed basidiocarp is very difficult. Moreover, certain traditionally recognized morphological species are known to occur as complexes of cryptic species. So, data about the woody plant colonization process are scarce. Four well-known polypore species responsible for wood decay were chosen: Fomes fomentarius, Ganoderma resinaceum, G. adspersum, and G. applanatum.
