Mayflies (Ephemeroptera) constitute a dominant part of macroinvertebrate biomass and production in temperate streams. Low vagility and related distributional restrictions make them an ideal model group for studies of aquatic fauna chorology in Palaearctic. Genus Ecdyonurus (fam. Heptgeniidae) is young, evolutionary progressive group of mayflies that shows rapid postglacial radiation with an apparent tendency to endemic speciation in isolated mountain ranges. The genus represents an excellent tool for critical assessment of historic scenarios of distribution and development of recent aquatic fauna in Central Europe.
