Detailed data on research infrastructure/laboratory

  1.  Description and data on the research infrastructure/laboratory:
The laboratory has an infrastructure that is used for the collection and processing of geographic data from progressive sources (especially DPZ), which are subsequently used for modelling forest ecosystems and supporting spatial decision-making.
The laboratory also archives, publishes and intensively uses for research several sources of progressive geographic data (aerial surveying, aerial laser scanning, oblique aerial photography, high-resolution satellite images, terrestrial laser scanning) mainly for the territory of the University Forestry Enterprise of the Technical University of Zvolen, but also other areas, or the entire territory of the Slovak Republic. A well-usable source of information is the historical orthophoto map of the entire territory of Slovakia from the period before collectivization. All of the above, as well as other sources of data and information, are structured and published in a modern way via web portals (http://mapy.tuzvo.sk/cgis/meta/katalog_hlavny.aspx).
  1. List of equipment:
The laboratory has powerful personal computers and graphics stations that are used for processing geographic data, evaluating remote sensing data, photogrammetric processing of aerial images and modeling of forest ecosystems. The HP Proliant ML150 G2 server is used for file sharing, operating the database system and as a license server for the software used. For processing geographic data and spatial modeling, powerful HP Z400, HP Z800 graphics stations, laptops and personal computers are available. For computationally demanding simulations of spatial phenomena and processes, a multiprocessor HP ProLiant DL980 G7 server was purchased, which is connected to a large-capacity 25 TB Clarion CX4-120 disk array for storing and backing up geographic data. Peripheral devices include a UMAX Mirage II Se A3 color scanner, an HP DesignJet 800 large-format plotter, a CalComp large-area digitizer, an HP DesignJet T2300ps eMFP color large-format plotter and scanner, external hard drives, and printers. The laboratory is also equipped with GPS receivers and mobile GPS/GIS systems as well as modern Trimble GeoExplorer geodetic instruments, a Topcon HiPer GGD precision GPS instrument, and a TOPCON GPT 3002 total station. Additional equipment for field work includes laptops and a FieldMap data collection kit (electronic compass, laser rangefinder, Hammerhead field PC, software). In 2012, the workplace was equipped with a FARO Focus 3D 120 ground laser scanner and point cloud processing software.
The workplace has licenses for software products from several suppliers. For solving scientific research projects and teaching in the field of geoinformatics, Idrisi (Idrisi 32, Andes, Taiga, Selva), ArcGIS (ArcEditor, ArcInfo, Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst, Network Analyst, Geostatistical Analyst) and ArcView 3.x products are used. ArcGIS Server is used to make digital maps and geographic data accessible. Licenses for MGE Intergraph - complete system, GeoMedia, EMDS, Topol and others are also available. Geomatica, eCognition, ERDAS tools are used for digital processing of remote sensing data. The laboratory has equipment for digital photogrammetry Intergraph Image Station, SSK (stereo softcopy kit), Inpho photogrammetric system software for digital photogrammetry and processing of LIDAR data, geodetic software Kokeš, GROMA. Planar systems are used for photogrammetric processing of aerial images.

  1. Justification of uniqueness/strategic importance:
Sustainable use of natural resources, preservation of biodiversity, reduction of negative impacts of climate change are among the basic priorities of environmental protection and landscape management. The basic basis for modern methods of planning and decision-making is timely, up-to-date and accurate information about the area of interest.
The main topics mentioned are addressed in relation to, or are influenced by, research into climate change and its impacts on forests and landscapes, the development of opinions of the scientific community, owners and managers as well as the wider public on the use of forests and landscapes (ecosystem services provided), forecasting and modelling of future changes in forests and landscapes from the point of view of natural and anthropogenic impacts.
