Close-range photogrammetry (CPR), with rapid development of computing technology and algorithms, is increasingly recognized as a valuable tool for creating 3D models and point clouds. At present, both partner institutions engage in research that focuses on estimation of diameter at breast height (DBH) using CRP. The Slovak partner builds a very dense point cloud of individual trees from multiple images, and estimates DBH of the tree with high accuracy. Relative spatial locations between trees are unknown. The Taiwan partner generates a spherical panorama and extract relative spatial locations of trees but estimation of DBH comes with lower accuracy. The overall goal of the joint project is comparing CRP at two spatial scales and developing a methodology of merging them.
